Not everyone enjoys going to the dentist. However, there are some people who flat out fear the dentist. Dental phobia is not only a very real condition, but it is also more common than you may think. In fact, according to a Dental Products Report, “one-third of the U.S. population avoids going to the dentist because of dental anxiety or fear.”

We know that professional dental care is paramount to keeping a healthy mouth and body. If you are putting off dental visits due to anxiety or fear, you should know there is a solution that can bridge the gap and help you experience dental care in a comfortable and rewarding way. Sedation dentistry is not just for those with special needs or invasive dental treatments, it is an effective, safe and easy solution for the average anxious dental patient.

What Does Sedation Dentistry Involve?

Most dentists, including those at Hollon Dental, offer two basic options in sedation dentistry: oral conscious sedation (taking a sedative medication prior to your appointment) and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas” that is breathed through a small mask during your procedure). Both are considered mild to moderate forms of sedation dentistry in which patients can attain complete relaxation but aren’t “put to sleep” like general anesthesia. In fact, you will be able to communicate with your dentist as you wish.

Nitrous oxide is one of the most preferred and time-tested methods of sedation dentistry. It is even safe for kids! Not only does it put patients into a calm state, but there are no lingering side effects once the mask is removed. You may return to your normal activities and even drive yourself home.

When Is Sedation Dentistry Used?

There are no strict rules or qualifications for receiving sedation dentistry. Most patients who are in good overall health can receive sedation dentistry. As a general guideline, if you would otherwise avoid the dentist without it, then sedation dentistry is right for you.

Patients can receive sedation dentistry for a simple dental cleaning or lengthy restorative work. Sedation dentistry is an excellent choice if you have the following:

  • Fear of needles or pain
  • Aversion to sounds (drill) or smells (latex) of the dentist
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • Special needs/physical limitations
  • Difficultly sitting still
  • Bad experience at the dentist as a child

At Hollon Dental, we’d like for you to discover how comfortable and relaxing dental care can be. If you feel anxious or fearful about your upcoming dental visit, please let us know so that we can explain your options for sedation dentistry and better prepare for your appointment.

Friendly staff, Great hygienists, and awesome dentist. Highly recommend all around.

Larry D.

I always enjoy my visit! Everyone is friendly and accommodating. I especially enjoy my hygienist who is very entertaining while my teeth are being cleaned. I believe the low key approach by Dr Hollon fits me just right. More like talking to a friend than a doctor. Keep up the great work!

Anita D.

Dr Hollon is probably the best dentist I've ever been to. He was very attentive to my needs and as gentle as you can be when pulling a tooth. His staff was excellent in what they do and very friendly. I have found my new dentist!!
